Project Overview

This project was a new build steel frame structure brick clad and expansion of the Avon Valley College campus due to the Army relocation from Germany back to Larkhill and the continued expansion/replacement of key teaching provision for the college.

This new build is a fantastic resource for Avon Valley College that will transform provision for the expressive arts and ICT and provide a welcome new home for the expanding sixth form and math’s  departments. Each specialised classroom will provide far greater opportunities for creative projects and will significantly enrich the curriculum, as this includes state of the art music suites and recording studios and arts crafts and drama facilities.

Externally new MUGA provisions, pitches and play facilities were completed as part of phase one of three integral new buildings to replace existing facilities.

Added Value

Building a much needed school in place of a derelict youth centre which was previously demolished by another contractor

Increasing the pupil intake by approximately 215 alongside the school’s existing 393 mainstream spaces

Army forces are relocating back to the UK from Germany, there are 700 new houses being built in and around the area, with the newly constructed school block this will give local children access to a school nearby.

Challenges and Solutions

Noise and dust were a challenge, working within a live school environment critical activity needed to be                  pre-planned and maintained to keep the disruptions to a minimum.

Working in a live environment was a challenge, we overcame this by coordinating deliveries, traffic management plans, working out of hours and on weekends to cause absolute minimal inconvenience of the day to day running of the school.

As part of the school was fully operational interlinking key services and connections was carefully managed and works were programmed to only take place once the school was closed.

Working through the challenging coronavirus pandemic caused extended materials and resources lead in times and availability. Communication with suppliers and the client was critical to get through this difficult time.
